Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the breast. Apart from enhancing femininity and attractiveness, it helps to boost your self esteem and confidence. Moreover, you will find it easier to wear your preferred clothing styles and swimwear.

Breast Augmentation - Achieve a Better Body Image

Your choice to have this surgery is an individual decision. Many women opt for breast augmentation surgery for varied reasons. Some may choose this option to achieve a better body image and more attractive look. Some want to correct a reduction in breast volume that has resulted from pregnancy, age, significant weight loss, or other factors; while some others want to bring balance to their breasts that may differ in size or shape.

There are many options available for women choosing breast augmentation surgery. Breast augmentation with breast implants is a popular technique commonly used to bring about a desired result. At present, the two types of breast implants offered are: silicone implants and saline breast implants. Both implant options are approved by the FDA.

The shell of both saline and silicone gel implants is made of solid silicone plastic. As the silicone implant has a texture that is similar to breast tissue, these implants provide a much more natural look and feel. Yet one of the limitations of silicone implants is that these carry the risk of rupture and the gel might leak into the body undetected. It can be difficult to diagnose since there are usually no symptoms. The leakage of gel can be removed without any ill effects. To help detect the silent rupture, it is recommended to undergo regular monitoring and MRI screening two to three years after breast augmentation surgery.

Rupture can occur in the case of saline implants also. When saline implants rupture, a decrease in the breast size can be clearly noticed in very few days. The saline fluid being leaked can be eliminated through the kidneys - harmlessly. This implant option is built to last at least ten years. But saline implants tend to have a higher incidence of rippling than the other ones. Both saline and silicone implants, require replacement over time. Before undergoing the surgery, it is vital to have a detailed discussion with the plastic surgeon concerning the pros and cons of your chosen breast implant options.

Different Incision Types & Placement

Breast implants can be placed either through an incision in the armpit, at the edge of the areola, or under the breast. For placing saline implants, 'an inch long' incision is required, and in case of silicone implants 'an inch and a half' incision is required. The method of inserting and positioning your implant depends on aspects such as age, implant type, body type, areolar diameter, breast anatomy, and extent of increase needed.

The ideal candidates for an axillary incision are women who have very little breast tissue and small areola. They should preferably select saline implants. Incision either under the breast or at the edge of the areola is perfect for women with breasts that were previously larger but which have shrunk due to pregnancy and breast feeding. Heavier women with larger breasts are often best served with an incision placed in front of the muscle.

Availability of Implants in Varying Sizes and Shapes

Breast implants are available in different sizes and shapes. Implant sizes range from about 100 to 400 cc. Implants with a moderately rough (textured) or smooth surface are available. Implants with a moderately rough surface help prevent the risk of capsular contracture. When compared to the smooth implants, the textured ones, particularly saline filled ones, are more likely to wrinkle. As it is well suited for all applications, smooth implants are preferred by most people.

When any foreign substance is placed under the skin, the body always forms a capsule of scar tissue (collagen fibers) around it. And this capsule can become contracted, which can lead to pain and an abnormally hard feel to the implant. If the process becomes more advanced, then it causes a change in breast shape, which may require removal of scar capsule or implant replacement. Evidence so far has shown that the problem is seen only in about 5 percent of women.

Other possible risks and complications include: bleeding, fluid accumulation, scarring, short-term or permanent changes in breast or nipple sensation, and persistent pain. Asymmetry problems caused are minor and do not usually require correction.

Surgery Performed by Spero J Theodorou

At Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, the surgery is performed by Dr. Spero J Theodorou. General anesthesia is usually required. It takes no more than two hours to complete the surgery. You may feel some discomfort for up to 48 hours. Stitches in the skin need not be removed. The patient can be back to sedentary work after one week, and can often get back to normal activities within two weeks. Strenuous physical exercise involving the upper body can be done after six weeks.

Breast augmentation procedure enables you to acquire a more satisfying body image, thus making you feel better about yourself.
